Washington, DC -

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland delivered his opening statement before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies today, outlining his priorities for the Justice Department. Garland emphasized the importance of public safety, civil rights, and environmental protection, and pledged to work with Congress to address these critical issues.

"The Justice Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our communities, protecting the civil rights of all Americans, and safeguarding our environment," said Garland. "These are fundamental to the rule of law and the preservation of our democracy."

Garland highlighted the Justice Department's efforts to combat violent crime, including the creation of a new task force to address gun trafficking. He also discussed the department's work to protect civil rights, including the enforcement of voting rights and the investigation of hate crimes.

In addition, Garland emphasized the importance of environmental protection and pledged to continue the department's work to enforce environmental laws and combat climate change.

"The Justice Department has a vital role to play in addressing the challenges facing our nation," said Garland. "I am committed to working with Congress to provide the resources and support necessary to meet these challenges and ensure that the Justice Department continues to serve as a pillar of justice and equality for all."
