Early Life and Education
Bal Gangadhar Tilak, fondly known as Lokmanya Tilak, was born on 23rd July 1856, in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. His father, Gangadhar Ramchandra Tilak, was a renowned Sanskrit scholar and school teacher. Tilak's upbringing instilled in him a deep love for his country and a strong sense of patriotism.
Tilak pursued his higher education at Deccan College, Pune, where he excelled in academics. He graduated with honors in Mathematics and Sanskrit in 1877.
Political Career and Nationalist Movement
Tilak's involvement in politics began during his college days. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of Indian independence and the need for self-governance. In 1890, he co-founded the Indian National Congress alongside Dadabhai Naoroji.
Tilak's fiery speeches and writings played a pivotal role in mobilizing the masses against British rule. He advocated for Swaraj (self-rule) and coined the iconic slogan, "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it."
Tilak's speeches and writings were often provocative, leading to multiple arrests and imprisonments by the British authorities. However, his unwavering resolve and commitment to the cause of Indian independence inspired countless others.
Later Life and Legacy
Tilak passed away on 1st August 1920, in Mumbai. His death sent shockwaves across the country and was mourned by millions. He left behind a remarkable legacy as a fearless nationalist, a visionary leader, and an inspiration to generations of freedom fighters.
