Eastern Equine Encephalitis Spreads in Northeastern United States

What is Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)?

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious mosquito-borne disease that can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). It is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the United States.

How is EEE Spread?

EEE is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. The virus can then be transmitted to humans and animals through mosquito bites.

What are the Symptoms of EEE?

Symptoms of EEE can range from mild to severe. Mild symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Severe symptoms may include seizures, disorientation, coma, and death.

How is EEE Treated?

There is no specific treatment for EEE. Treatment is supportive and may include hospitalization, intravenous fluids, and medications to reduce swelling in the brain.

How Can I Protect Myself from EEE?

There are several things you can do to protect yourself from EEE:

  • Avoid areas where mosquitoes are active, especially during dusk and dawn.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when you are outdoors.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535.
  • Make sure your windows and doors have screens to keep mosquitoes out.
  • Get vaccinated against EEE if you live in an area where the virus is common.

What is the Outlook for People with EEE?

The outlook for people with EEE depends on the severity of their symptoms. About one-third of people with EEE die from the disease. Another third develop permanent brain damage.
