Kamala Harris: We cannot let our future be decided by violence

Vice President marks one year since Capitol riot

Transcript of interview with Face the Nation

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris marked the one-year anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riot by speaking from the Capitol and saying in part, "We cannot let our future be decided by those bent on silencing our voices."

In her remarks Saturday night, Harris recalled the events of January 6, 2021, when a mob of Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. She called the attack an "assault on our democracy" and said that it was "an attempt to silence the voices of all those who believe in our democracy."

Harris stressed the importance of unity and said, "We must come together as a nation to protect our democracy." She added, "We must work together to ensure that such an attack never happens again."

The vice president also called on Americans to "speak out against hatred and division." She said, "We must not allow the forces of hate and division to tear us apart."

Harris's speech come amid growing concerns about the state of democracy in the United States. A recent poll found that a majority of Americans believe that democracy is under attack in the country.
