Early Life and Education
Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a Tamil Indian biologist, while her father, Donald Harris, was a Jamaican economist. Harris grew up in a politically active family and attended Howard University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics.
Legal and Political Career
After graduating from law school, Harris served as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County and later as the district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, she was elected Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman and first African American to hold that office. In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate, representing California.
Vice Presidency
In 2020, Harris made history by becoming the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to serve as Vice President of the United States. She has been a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, voting rights, and women's rights.
